A few tips about staying in Positano. The main road above Positano can be quite busy so beware of anything that is above the main road.
It can be okay to be on the main road as long as you are below the road. In fact a lot of good Positano hotels are in this category.
Heading east out of Positano towards Arienzo the walk is flat and easy so getting to town on shankes pony is okay.
Accommodation to the west is a bit more of a challenge. This area is very steep and can be quite a climb, but the views are huge. Check to see if these hotels run shuttle services to town, a lot do.

If you are looking for good value out of the main town, this is it. When I say out of town it is an easy 10-15 minute walk. It also has the benefit of a track down to Arienzo beach.
Gilda has 3 roomy apartments which all look out to the sea. Apartments are very handy for preparing your own meals but I would have to say that because the breakfasts are so good at Gilda and the ristorante in Positano are aplenty you don't really need a kitchen.
You could not wish for better hosts than Gilda, Daniella and Rosa, they are so friendly and helpful. There are great views back towards Positano from the main terrace.
Rates are about 50 Euros per person per night including breakfast.

This hotel is in an awesome spot just west of the main beach. It is far enough around to hold the sun for just that little bit longer and very handy to the beach and village.

Just around the corner from Positano this hotel overlooks the beach of Fornillo. If you like to be right on the beach and listen to the water lapping on the shore then this is the place for you.
There are 34 rooms that open out on to sea view terraces. Even the bathrooms have windows overlooking the sea. It is an easy walk to town, no climbing required. The hotel can be hard to find particularly at night. Even taxi drivers struggle.
I prefer the elevated views rather than being down on the waters edge, but each to his own.
Room rates are 130 to 200 Euro per room per night including breakfast

Villa Rosa is on the road that leads down into Positano village. As such this may not be as appealing as some of those on the western ridge but it does have the advantage of holding the sun well into the evening. Views are over the rooftops of the village to the sea.
